SALARY: $26.00 to $31.00 per hour, depending on qualifications & experience
ABOUT CHESLATTA CARRIER NATION
Cheslatta Carrier Nation (CCN) is a First Nations community of 350 members located 25 km south of Burns Lake in BC’s northern interior. CCN’s Core Territory encompasses the Nechako Reservoir and includes portions of Tweedsmuir and Entiako Provincial Parks.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Cheslatta Carrier Nation is seeking a dedicated and community-oriented Guardian to support the Natural Resource department in stewarding and protecting the lands and waters within Cheslatta territory. This field-based position plays a vital role in safeguarding cultural and ecological values through environmental monitoring, data collection, community engagement, and restoration efforts. The Guardian position is an on-call/part time basis and is dependent on external funding. The hours are unpredictable and range from 0 hours per week to 20, with occasional full-time work available.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct site monitoring, including environmental, cultural, and archaeological monitoring of active development sites, and protection of culturally significant sites.
Conduct regular patrols and monitoring of lands, waters, and culturally significant sites.
Collect environmental and field data, including water and soil sampling, stream and habitat mapping, fisheries and archaeological data, and other related data collection needs in support of the CCN Natural Resources Department.
Write and submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports based on monitoring activities and field data collection.
Participate in wildfire response and restoration field work.
Work alongside other Guardians and industry professionals on projects within Cheslatta territory.
Integrate Indigenous and local knowledge with western scientific practices to support stewardship goals.
Participate in outreach and education initiatives for CCN members, the community, and the public regarding Guardian initiatives.
Support other community events and duties as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (preferred) and clear driver’s abstract.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel) and Avenza mapping; training is available.
Safety training certificates (e.g., First Aid, WHMIS, Swift Water) or willingness to obtain.
Ability to work in field-based environments, including travel to remote and rugged locations.
Ability to work in various weather conditions and complete physically demanding tasks.
Ability to operate ATVs, hike long distances, and participate in marine-based work.
